Good education plants seeds when we are young, and these continue to bear fruit throughout life.
Pope Francis

A Letter from Pope Francis addressed to Everyone, the ‘Laudato Si,’ summarises the heart and spirit of the Pelota de Trapo campaign.

Pope Francis participated in a meeting with young people in Mozambique, engaged in a programme of the Scholas Occurrentes Pontifical Foundation. There was much to celebrate: poetry, dance, and song. "But there was one thing that touched my heart a lot," the Pope shared. “It was a small rag ball. I played with a rag ball when I was young…” What touched him deeply was the fragility of the ball, tied together with string, and how much it symbolised for the youth whose hopes were deeply embedded in it.

When considering the fragility of our planet, Pope Francis advises: “If we want to bring about deep change, we need to realize that certain mindsets really do influence our behaviour”.

The Pelota de Trapo Campaign is a call to action inviting governments, policymakers, institutions and companies to be part of a new way of thinking and a new culture, an education for a new way of life and collective narrative; to support our children "through effective pedagogy, to grow in solidarity, responsibility and compassionate care".

Laudato Si

A letter from Pope Francis: Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I invite everyone to cooperate in caring for our common home. To understand the urgency of the challenge we face, we have to focus on education which opens minds and hearts to a deeper and wider understanding of reality.

One world with a common plan

Pope Francis urges us to throw off our cynicism and overturn what he calls ‘the globalization of indifference’ - “We need to strengthen the conviction that we are one single human family”. We need to ensure that education brings peace and justice to the world.

Global compact

We need a Global Compact on Education aimed at developing a new universal solidarity and a new humanism.

We need a commitment to action that at last ensures that value-based social and emotional learning will be brought front and centre as a core component of the education system.

Pelota de trapo

In this campaign Scholas Occurrentes, Think Equal and Fondazione Milan have come together to launch “Pelota de Trapo: Re-imagine Education”, an initiative that invites policymakers, artists, athletes, thinkers, governments, institutions, business people, academics and civil society to be part of this new movement to reimagine education and create a new, cohesive and loving world.

Pelota de Trapo proposes holistic, inclusive, quality, value-based education, which puts children and young people as the protagonists of the education system. Through creativity, play, values and social and emotional competencies, children (from the age of 3) and young people are invited to interact with each other in a new way: within a new and caring community that is sensitive, creative, empathetic, inclusive, gender-equal, and compassionate.
