Since last April 28 until September 15, 2021, the incorporation of focus or digital forums is being developed within the framework of the project “Voices of Chile”, an initiative of Scholas Occurrentes, Chile headquarters, and the Catholic University Silva Henriquez, to create spaces for dialogue for the participation of adolescents and young people for the construction of solidarity, dignity and justice in our country.

Together with other institutions such as UNICEF, Scholas and UCSH are calling high school and university students to participate in “Voices of Chile: Young people and the constituent process”, a platform that seeks to integrate in a concrete way the opinion of young people up to 25 years of age. So far, more than 650 people have registered throughout Chile and it is expected to reach a participation of more than 10,000.

As a relevant fact, throughout the current process it is highlighted that 65% of the participants are women from all over the country and that 50% of the total number of participants are university students. “We want both high school and university students to participate because it is their voice that has made the changes in recent years and that, thanks to these events, we have the opportunity to write a new Magna Carta. It is a national call that no educational, community or social institution should miss”, said the director of Outreach of the UCSH, Francisco De Ferari.

The dynamics of the project contemplates both virtual and face-to-face instances, where reflections and ideas are collected to be recorded, systematized and analyzed, acting as relevant inputs for public deliberation on the new Constitution.

Those interested in joining can come from various educational institutions, social organizations or parishes, without necessarily being confined to a specific area. The goal is to be able to represent in the best possible way, the various instances of citizen, social, religious, economic and political participation, of which many young people in the country are a part.

The project has a stage of individual virtual consultation as well as community meetings that will be systematized until September 15. This information will be consolidated in a public document that will be delivered to the constituents in November 2021.

Permanent integration actions

The Catholic University Silva Henríquez (UCSH) and the Pontifical Scholas Occurrentes Foundation have launched -since May 2020- several actions focused on adolescents and young people in terms of education and regional integration.

In this regard, it is essential to highlight the trajectory of Scholas Occurrentes, an institution that emerged as an international organization, present in 190 countries, whose mission is to achieve the integration of all students around the world through technological, sports and artistic proposals that promote education from the culture of encounter.

“We have already held some meetings in schools in Santiago, and the young people, and even children in seventh and eighth grade, are thinking about a more just and egalitarian society, where they pointed out that the inequality gap in the country needs to be closed. We want to give more strength to young people from other parts of Chile, from different ethnic groups and realities that do not always have the possibility of someone listening to them, gathering their reflections so that these can reach formal instances of public advocacy”, says the national coordinator of the Scholas Occurrentes Foundation in Chile, Gustavo Albornoz, in the framework of the launching of the initiative.

In addition to the support of UNICEF, the project is sponsored by some institutions of higher education such as ENAC, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Universidad Católica del Norte, Universidad Católica del Maule, Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción, among others. The Archbishopric of Santiago, Caritas-Chile, Vicariate of Youth Hope, Salesian Congregation, Cardinal Silva Henriquez Foundation and some municipalities that have joined the project from their Youth Offices.
